Still having misfire issues with the E28. Here is the latest video.
Seeming to be a spark issue, I started in to take a look at the distributor cap and rotor. Of course to get there you need to remove the fan and shroud.
Other than that it was pretty easy to remove. This is my first car with a distributor, so I don’t know how worn is too worn, but it didn’t look good.
I cleaned the rotor and points off with a wire brush
. Not sure you are even supposed to do that?
Anyway, I went inside and ordered a new cap, rotor, and spark plug wires from FCPEuro.
[ Though on a side note as good as FCPEuro is, every time I put in my BMW as a 1988 535i it forces it to be an E34, not E28. I have to put it in as a 1987, not sure why.]
With parts ordered and on the way (thought probably not until after the holiday weekend), I decided to go ahead and reassemble everything to see if it ran any differently.
Did it?
Yes, yes it did. MUCH worse. I barely made it around the block, with the engine completely dying twice. Maybe a bit too aggressive with the wire brush?
So no cruising in the E28 this weekend. I’ll just pull the fan and shroud so I have easy access when the parts arrive, and maybe tackle the trunk gasket / seal finally.

This just makes it clear to me that it’s time for an S54 swap.

Is the button cracked?

An engine swap isn’t completely out of the question, but not right now. I can spend a couple hundred on parts, but I’m not willing to drop a couple grand in the current economy.

Good question, I’m not sure what it should look like! I guess I’ll find out in a few days.

It should be a round, spring loaded button that makes contact with the distributor rotor. If you push on it it should spring back out, and it should be entirely round with no cracks or flats on the sides

The LS swap for BMWs...

It was springy, but looking at the pictures it has flats on the sides. I’ll post a picture of the new one when it comes in.

Looking at the FCPEuro picture of the new Bremi cap I ordered, it is not perfectly rounded on the tip.

Huh, I guess that keeps it from... spinning with the rotor if it seizes to it? Not sure. You Euro people are always doing something fancy and unnecessary
MSD distributor cap (used, from Google) for comparison

Interesting enough, if I look at some of the alternate parts (Bosch, other) some of the tips are completely round.
